The South Dakota Spend-O-Meter is based on the total amount of $3,548,720,707 appropriated by the South Dakota State Legislature for the current fiscal year (2009), which ends June 30, 2009.

The spending total includes the amounts appropriated by the legislature during the Regular Session of the 83rd Legislature. The FY2009 budget numbers were taken from the Appropriations Bill. Actual budget totals may vary.

The funds represent the total state government spending including the state General Fund. The amount does not include local spending, including education spending derived from local tax sources, nor does it include federal funds that do not go through state agencies, such as Social Security, Medicare, agriculture subsidies, etc.
